Background

Malta, the Island in the heart of the Mediterranean consists of 3 main Islands, namely Malta (approx. 240 sq. Kms), Gozo (Approx. 67 sq.Kms) and Comino (Approx. 2 Sq.Kms). The population in total is around 400,000.

Malta and its sister Islands have a long history, from its settlers ‘The Phoenicians’ to the British who had given Malta its independence in 1964.


The Maltese islands have plenty to offer, from the beautiful crystal clear waters and practically year round sunshine, to its amazing Archaeological and architectural heritage which is second to none.

Coming to Malta

There are two ways to get to Malta, either by Air or by Sea. From any Country in Europe you can come to Malta by Air, which on average would take no longer then 3 hours. There are direct flights from all major European cities to and from Malta everyday. Whilst coming to Malta by sea you may either come with a Ferry ship from Salerno (Naples) direct to Malta (Approx 16 hours) or either from Sicily on a high speed catamaran (Approx 3-4 hours).

Scheduled flights are operated by: Airmalta, Lufthansa, British Airways, Alitalia, Tuninter, Egyptair, Balkan Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Emirates Airlines.

Ferry ships from Salerno / Valencia are operated by, Grimaldi Group.

High speed Catamaran from Sicily, is operated by, Virtu Steamships.

Passport and Visa Regulations

Entry Visas are not required for stays up to three months for holidays by nationals of the European Community. Nationals of Countries which require a Visa are to contact the Maltese Embassy or Consulate.

Banks

Banks opening hours are: 0830 hrs to 1330 hrs, Mondays to Fridays and up to 1130 hrs on Saturdays. ATM’s are situated in all major commercial and touristic areas.

Time

Malta follows Central European Time (CET) which is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Electricity

Electricity runs on 220 volts, single phase, the square fitting standard 3 pin British style plugs and sockets are used.

Water

Tap water is safe for drinking.

Religion

Malta is predominantly Roman Catholic, however there are also churches belonging to various other Religions.

Beach Facilities

There are a number of Sandy beaches, mainly in the northern part of the Island, namely Mellieha Bay, Paradise Bay, Golden Sands and Little Armier. In Gozo you will find Ramla Bay and San Blas.

Swimming in Malta is completely safe and our Waters are literally Crystal Clear, beach facilities include, sun beds, umbrellas, bar & Restaurants, showers and changing rooms. On most beaches you will also find various Water sports, such as Jet skies, surfboards, paddling boats, kayaks and more…

Medical Care

Malta’s general Hosipital is St. Lukes Hospital in Guardamangia, however besides St. Lukes one can also find a further 3 main private Hospitals. Furthermore one can find various Medical Clinics in every district.

Shopping

Shops are usually opened from 0900 hrs to 1300 hrs and 1600 hrs to 1900 hrs. However in most touristic areas shop stay open throughout the day and stay open until 2200 hrs. The main shopping areas may be found in Valletta and Sliema. All major credit cards are accepted at most leading shops and restaurants.
